Born in Gansu Province, Guo-Qing spent her early life in the remote desert of northwest China participating in annual camel caravan trips to trading centers such as Urumqi. She moved to Xi’an for school and was immersed in the traditional arts there just as the Cultural Revolution disrupted life for hundreds of millions of Chinese. When the country’s universities were finally reopened in 1978 after bing shuttered for 10 years, she was in the first returning class at the Central Academy of Fine Art (now the Art Institute of Tsinghua University). After graduating she worked on a major public art commission from the city of Xi’an, and taught sculpture and 3D design at Xi'an University of Art. Moving to Japan in 1988 she studied Japanese lacquer making techniques under the Urushi Master Dr. Shinkai at Kyoto University of Fine Arts and collected an MFA along with a number of awards, exhibitions and commissions. She moved to New York City in 1991 and entered the studio of the avant-garde artist Arakawa Shusaku.

In the most recent 30 years, she has taught painting and exhibited her sculpture and painting in China, Japan, Hawaii, and New York City. She continues to work in mixed media and found materials.
